Headshot of Amy Marlan, Central Coast portrait photographer

About Amy Marlan

I have spent the last two decades doing what I love most — helping people see themselves the way the people who love them do. As a photographer on California's Central Coast, I create portraits that become cherished heirlooms, not just files that live on a hard drive.

My journey to photography was far from conventional. At age 10, my Nana, an artist who viewed the world through both a creative lens and a paintbrush, gave me my first camera. Years later, I built a career as an art director, where I learned to tell visual stories that move people. That experience shapes every portrait session I create today.

My studio at 750 Farroll Road, Suite B1, Grover Beach is where the magic happens — but I'm just as at home on a sun-drenched hillside, a sandy beach, or your family's favorite stretch of vineyard.

My Story

My creative journey started with a degree in Graphic Communications and Design from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I loved the intersection of art and message — how the right layout, the right color, the right image could make someone feel something real. That passion led me to a career as an art director, where I spent years shaping visual narratives for brands and publications.

Somewhere along the way, I realized the images were always my favorite part. I didn't just want to direct the photography — I wanted to be behind the camera. So I made the leap, and I haven't looked back.

Over 20+ years of professional photography later, I have refined my craft through thousands of sessions. From quiet, tender family moments to bold senior portraits that capture a teenager on the edge of something amazing, from the joyful chaos of a pet session to the polished confidence of a professional headshot — I have seen (and loved) it all.

The Central Coast is home. It is so diverse with the rolling hills, ocean, and vineyards – San Luis Obispo County is one of the most beautiful places in the world to create portraits. The community here is like no other.

My Approach

My years as an art director gave me something that sets my work apart: I don't just take photos — I direct them. Every session begins with creative planning. We talk about the feeling you want to capture, the way you want to see your family or yourself, and the space where your portraits will live. I think about lighting, composition, wardrobe, color palette, and emotion before the first shutter click.

This is what I call the elevated client experience. It means you're not just booking a photographer — you're gaining a creative partner who is invested in making you look and feel extraordinary. From our first planning call through your reveal and ordering appointment, every step is designed to feel personal, relaxed, and exciting.

I believe portraits should be more than digital files. That's why I design and produce custom wall art, designer albums, and photography gifts that turn your images into artwork you can hold, hang, and pass down. When you see a canvas on your wall every morning and it makes you smile, that's when I know I have done my job.

Community Involvement

Photography is my profession, but giving back is my purpose. One of the things I am most proud of is founding Pet Portraits with Purpose, a fundraiser where I photograph beloved pets and donate the proceeds to organizations that serve our community. To date, we have raised just shy of $10,000 for the U-Pick Pantry at New Life Community Center, which served 40,351 people in 2025.

Seeing a family light up when they see their dog's portrait for the first time — knowing that same session helped put food on someone's table — that's the kind of work that fills your heart in a way nothing else can.

Beyond Pet Portraits with Purpose, I am actively involved in my local Rotary club, where I volunteer my time and skills for community projects. I also support small businesses through the South County Chambers of Commerce and maintain my commitment to ethical business practices as a member of the Better Business Bureau. The Central Coast isn't just where I work — it's home, and I believe in investing in the people and places that make this community special.
