Paso Robles is a completely different Central Coast from the one outside my studio window, and that is exactly why I love photographing families here. Drive forty-five minutes up Highway 101 from Grover Beach and the marine layer disappears, the hills open up, and the evening light turns the color of the wine this valley is famous for. The Spanish name means the pass of the oaks, and those oaks are still the best thing in the frame — enormous, gnarled, and hundreds of years old, throwing long shadows across the vine rows an hour before sunset. Paso Robles families tend to live a little more spread out, with room for the kids and the dog and sometimes the horses, and a family session here should feel like that. We might photograph your family under the gazebo at Downtown City Park, walk the paved river trail at Larry Moore Park with the stroller, or head out to the oak hills and vineyards on the west side for the golden-hour portraits this region is known for.
